Eeective Learning Requires Neuronal Remodeling of Hebbian Synapses
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper revisits the classical neuroscience paradigm of Hebbian learning. We nd that a necessary requirement for eeective as-sociative memory learning is that the eecacies of the incoming synapses should be uncorrelated. This requirement is diicult to achieve in a robust manner by Hebbian synaptic learning, since it depends on network level information. EEective learning can yet be obtained by a neuronal process that maintains a zero sum of the incoming synaptic eecacies. This normalization drastically improves the memory capacity of associative networks, from an essentially bounded capacity to one that linearly scales with the network's size. Such neuronal normalization can be successfully carried out by activity-dependent homeostasis of the neuron's synaptic eeca-cies, which was recently observed in cortical tissue. Thus, our nd-ings strongly suggest that eeective associative learning with Heb-bian synapses alone is biologically implausible and that Hebbian synapses must be continuously remodeled by neuronally-driven regulatory processes in the brain.

متن کاملEffective Neuronal Learning with Ineffective Hebbian Learning Rules
In this article we revisit the classical neuroscience paradigm of Hebbian learning. We find that it is difficult to achieve effective associative memory storage by Hebbian synaptic learning, since it requires network-level information at the synaptic level or sparse coding level. Effective learning can yet be achieved even with nonsparse patterns by a neuronal process that maintains a zero sum ...
متن کاملHomeostatic role of heterosynaptic plasticity: models and experiments
Homosynaptic Hebbian-type plasticity provides a cellular mechanism of learning and refinement of connectivity during development in a variety of biological systems. In this review we argue that a complimentary form of plasticity-heterosynaptic plasticity-represents a necessary cellular component for homeostatic regulation of synaptic weights and neuronal activity. The required properties of a h...
متن کاملActivity-Dependent Development of Axonal and Dendritic Delays, or, Why Synaptic Transmission Should Be Unreliable
Systematic temporal relations between single neuronal activities or population activities are ubiquitous in the brain. No experimental evidence, however, exists for a direct modification of neuronal delays during Hebbian-type stimulation protocols. We show that in fact an explicit delay adaptation is not needed if one assumes that the synaptic strengths are modified according to the recently ob...
